At Burton Borough, we are committed to providing a high-quality Careers Education that equips our students with the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to make informed choices and thrive in the world of work.
Our Careers programme is delivered through a wide range of engaging opportunities, including dedicated PSHE lessons, subject-specific “Careers in the Curriculum” content, meaningful work experience, and a variety of in-school and external events and visits. This integrated approach ensures that every student receives timely, relevant and inspiring careers guidance throughout their school journey.
We place a strong emphasis on developing employability skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving and resilience. These are embedded across our curriculum and reinforced through real-world learning experiences, helping students to understand the links between their education and future aspirations.
We are proud to be fully compliant with all eight of the Gatsby Benchmarks – the national standard for effective careers provision. Many of our careers initiatives are designed not only to meet these benchmarks but to go beyond them, offering a well-rounded, exciting and inclusive curriculum that prepares young people for success in further education, apprenticeships, and the workplace.
Our Careers Education programme reflects our commitment to supporting every student to explore their potential, broaden their horizons, and take confident steps towards their future.
The Gatsby Benchmark sets out a framework for academies to delivery ‘good career guidance’.
- A stable careers programme – Every academy should have an embedded programme of career education and guidance that is known and understood by students, parents, governors and employers.
- Learning from career and labour market information – Every student, and their parents, should have access to good quality information about future study option and labour market opportunities. They will need the support of an informed advisor to make best use of available information.
- Addressing the need of each student – Students have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support needs to be tailored the needs of each student. A academy’s careers programme should be embed equality and diversity considerations throughout.
- Linking curriculum learning to careers – all teachers should like curriculum learning with careers. STEM subject teachers should highlight the relevance of STEM subject for a wide range of future career paths.
- Encounters with employers and employees – Every student should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment activities, including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes.
- Experiences of workplaces – Every student should have first-hand experiences of the workplace through work visits. work shadowing and/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities and to expand their networks.
- Encounters with further and higher education – All students should understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them. This includes both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace.
- Personal guidance –Every student should have opportunities for guidance interviews with a Careers Adviser, who could be internal (a member of school staff) or external, provided they are trained to an appropriate level. These should be available whenever significant study or career choices are being made.
