Personal development
Ercall Wood
At Burton Borough we recognise that the curriculum extends beyond just academic success. It goes beyond what is learned within a classroom and should include access to a wide range of activities, including the arts, sport and community engagement. We encourage our students to take an active role in both the school and the wider community. We work closely with our community partners to ensure that our students gain experience and skills that, when partnered with the academic part of their education, give them the skills, abilities, attributes and qualifications that allow them to pursue fulfilling careers, become responsible and useful members of society and successful global citizens.
At Burton Borough we understand that good personal development is crucial in supporting students through their journey into adulthood, empowering them to make safe and healthy life choices. Our goal is to ensure our students are thoroughly prepared for life beyond school. Through the experiences and opportunities, we offer, we aim to educate our students to become responsible, respectful and useful members of their community. We give them the tools to become active in public life, be that through volunteering, public service or supporting their community in other ways.
We understand that educating our students in the importance of British Values broadens their understanding of democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, individual liberty and rule of law. Thus, allowing them to be responsible and respectful citizens of the future.
One of the aspects of Personal Development that we see as fundamentally important is the promotion of students’ ability to keep themselves mentally and physically healthy. We want them to develop in confidence, resilience and knowledge, so they have the tools to behave with integrity, look after themselves and others and promote their own wellbeing. One way we do this is by having a strong emphasis on student voice and by the work we do with oracy.
We place emphasis on the ability to work together and celebrate each other’s differences, seeing them as a positive and a way that makes us all unique. We embrace and celebrate diversity. Our aim is to fully prepare and equip our students for the transition to the next part of their educational journey, so that can be as confident and successful as possible.
