Tutor Time Programme Overview
Tutor Time
Tutor time at Burton Borough School is structured across five 30-minute sessions each week, providing students with a consistent programme that supports their personal development, wellbeing, and engagement with the wider world.
Each week, every year group attends an assembly linked to the current PSHE topic and one of our core school values: Proud, Ambitious and Caring, alongside the relevant British Value. Assemblies are delivered by a range of speakers, including external presenters, students and members of staff, allowing students to hear diverse perspectives and experiences.
Throughout the year, we also mark important national and international events such as International Women’s Day, Black History Month, and World Mental Health Day, helping students develop awareness and understanding of key social themes. In addition, students take part in a termly House assembly, which celebrates achievements and strengthens our school community.
PSHE is delivered across two dedicated tutor sessions to ensure continuity and depth of learning. These sessions focus on key aspects of personal, social and health education, supporting students in developing the knowledge and skills they need to navigate modern life confidently and responsibly.
On two further days, students participate in Votes for Schools, a national programme that enables them to explore and debate challenging current issues in an impartial and structured way. Students at Burton Borough School discuss the weekly topic, vote on the issue, and share their views, ensuring that their voices are heard and that they feel empowered to engage with topics that shape society.
Tutor time also includes a literacy session, which forms part of our whole-school commitment to raising the profile of reading across the curriculum. These sessions reinforce our vocabulary strategy and encourage students to read both fiction and non-fiction for enjoyment and enrichment.
Together, these elements create a comprehensive tutor programme that supports students’ personal development, encourages thoughtful discussion, and provides a broad and enriching experience for all learners.
