Welcome to Burton Borough School: Year 6 to Year 7 Transition
Ambitious. Proud. Caring.
At Burton Borough School, these are more than just words — they are the values that shape everything we do, especially when welcoming our newest students and their families
Transitioning from primary to secondary school is a big step, and we understand it can feel both exciting and a little daunting. That’s why we’ve developed a robust and thoughtful transition programme, carefully tailored to support every Year 6 student as they prepare to join our school community.
From March onwards, we begin building strong, supportive relationships with our new families. Our dedicated Transition Team — including Mrs Bedford, Mrs Heins, and the Head of Year — work closely with all our feeder primary schools, both within the Newport cluster and beyond, to learn as much as we can about each individual student. This allows us to thoughtfully place students into tutor groups and ensure any SEND or inclusion needs are fully supported from day one.
We are incredibly proud of our comprehensive transition journey, and we are committed to making sure every Year 6 student feels confident, excited, and ready to start life at BBS — without any lingering worries over the summer holidays.

What Does Our Transition Programme Look Like?
Our programme begins with primary school visits by the Transition Team to meet students in familiar surroundings and start building that all-important connection.
We then invite all Year 6 students to attend four engaging after-school sessions, designed to introduce them to our school, staff, and each other:
- Meet and Greet
- Students meet their future tutors and peers.
- Parents and carers are invited to a welcome talk with Mrs Bedford, Mrs Heins, and the Head of Year.
- Science Adventure
- A hands-on session led by our Science Department, where students enjoy a fun and interactive scientific activity.
- Time Capsule Creation
- A reflective and creative session where students create a time capsule to be opened in Year 11 — a meaningful way to mark their journey.
- Inter-Tutor Rounders and Picnic
- A relaxed and fun event to encourage team building and friendships across tutor groups.
These sessions lead into our Transition Days, where students experience a real taste of life at BBS. They take part in PE, core subjects, DT, Art, and Languages, and enjoy a free lunch at our Bistro Canteen on Day 1. It’s a wonderful opportunity to familiarise themselves with the school environment, meet staff, and begin making lasting friendships.
We finish the transition programme with a dedicated Transition Evening for parents and carers. This is your chance to meet your child’s tutor and hear more about what to expect in September, ask any final questions, and feel confident that your child is in caring, capable hands.
At Burton Borough School, we are here every step of the way. We believe that by working closely with families and all of our feeder primary schools, we create a transition experience that is welcoming, supportive, and inspiring — so your child can start their secondary school journey feeling ambitious, proud, and cared for.
